Abstract Purpose:To report findings regarding retinal vascular density in relation to ganglion cell complex(GCC)using optical coherence tomography angiography.

Cases and Method:This study was made on 52 eyes with open-angle glaucoma. The series comprised 28 eyes with preperimetric glaucoma and 24 eyes with early-stage glaucoma. GCC was evaluated regarding superior and inferior hemispheres and regarding two inner and outer circles. The GCC finding for each 9 segments were compared with retinal vascular density in the corresponding area.

Findings:Significant differences were present regarding GCC between healthy and affected retinal areas(p<0.01). The differences were more pronounced in eyes with early-stage glaucoma(p=0.00002). GCC and retinal vascular density were significantly correlated both inside the GCC(r=0.62, p=0.0004)and outside(r=0.45, p=0.016). Retinal vascular density was significantly correlated with mean deviation(MD)of visual field(t=2.5, p=0.02).

Conclusion:Retinal vascular density promises to serve as parameter in the diagnosis of glaucoma and its progression. Decreased retinal vascular density may indicate abnormal visual field defect in glaucoma.
