  • Look Inside

We determined the activity of C3b receptor on the erythrocytes in 87 cases of Behçet disease. Immune-adherence hemagglutination method was used.

The activity of C3b receptor was reduced in 28 cases (32%) of the series. As a significant contrast, it was reduced in only 2 (7%) out of 29 healthy adults (p< 0.01).

The incidence of reduced C3b receptor activity was greater in the anterior ocular type than in the fundus type of the disease (p<0.001) .

Patients with defective C3b activity tended to show higher scores for extraocular involvement of the disease than in those with positive C3b activity (p<0.05). A similar tendency was present-for the former group to show higher peripheral leukocyte counts, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and elevated CRP values(p<0.01). These findings seemed to indicate that the C3b recep-tor on the erythrocytes were closely associated in the onset, clinical course and prognosis of Behcet disease.
