  • Look Inside

We reviewed a consecutive series of 540 cases of Behçet disease with ocular lesions. We paid particular attention to the involvement of the second eye and its implication in the visual prognosis.

We could confirm that the second eye was involved within 2 years after the initial appearance of ocular lesions in the first eye in 94.0% of the cases. The second eye was involved within 5 years in 98.1% of the cases.

Iridocyclitis was the cardinal feature in 16.8% of male and in 35.7% of female patients two years after onset of ocular lesions. This type was generally associated with good visual prognosis. Iridocyclitis was present in oneeye and uveoretinitis in the other in 6% of cases in the present series.

A total of 389 cases manifested bilateral uveoretinitis type of the disease. The severity of ocular lesions was not necessarily the same in this group. Judging by our new criteria about unequality between both eyes, considerable錨ifference in visual acuity between both eyes was present in 28.5% of the cases at 5 years afterocular onset and in 30.2% at 10 years.
