  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We studied 47 cases of ocular sarcoidosis regard-ing angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), serum adenosine deaminase (ADA) and β2-microglobulin (β2-MG). When compared with 50 normal controls, the patients showed elevated values for ACE (p< 0.005), ADA (p <0.001) and β2-MG (p <0.001). Serum ADA was higher in patients treated with systemic corticosteroid than in treated ones. It was also higher during the recurrent stage than in chronic active stage (p<0.05) or inactive stage (P<0.01). β2-MG was higher during recurrences (p<0.05). No significant differences were present in ACE level among the different stages of ocular sarcoidosis. ADA was positively correlated to ACE (r=0.52, p<0.0005) and to β2-MG (r=0.36, p< 0.05). ADA increased when signs of iridocyclitis were present (p<0.05). Serum ADA and β2-MG were thus more closely related with ocular sar-coidosis than ACE.
