タイ国での失明対策の現状

Prevention of blindness in Thailand

（1）我々はタイの眼科医療のレベルアップにつとめ，失明防止システム作りに参画した。

（2）タイ国は中進国の中間入りをし，失明率0.6％程度でWHOのランクでBランクに入っている。

（3）医師の意識の改革をめざし，インターンなど研修期を地方に送ることにより成功させつつある。

（4）失明防止活動はWHOの呼びかけにより活動をはじめたが，その対応が早くかつ実をいちはやく上げつつある基礎には，日本政府援助による人づくり，新しい眼科教育機関の創設が大きな力となっている。

（5）医療援助のあり力はいろいろあるが，我々が指向した，人づくり，システム作りの方向は，長い目でみてもっとも良い方法と確信する。

There are an estimated 200,000 blind people in Thailand which has a population of roughly 45 mil-lion. Bilateral cataract accounts for about one-half of the blindness. It is estimated that 40,000 cataract surgeries are necessary each year if unilateral cata-ract cases are also taken into consideration. There is currently an acute shortage of qualified ophthal-mologists, which at present number just 100 and of which 70% are practising in Bangkok. A nation-wide project is keenly needed aiming at establish-ing ophthalmic treatment centers in urban areas and in increasing the number of ophthlamic sur-geons.
