Abstract. Purpose:To report the long-term outcome of laser photocoagulation applied to capillary microaneurysms in diabetic maculopathy. Cases and Method:This study was made on 13 eyes of 11 patients with diabetic maculopathy supposedly due to capillary microaneurysms. The age ranged from 58 to 83 years, average 73 years. Visual acuity ranged from 0.3 to 1.2, with 0.8 as the median. Capillary microaneurysms were coagulated by yellow or green laser, for 0.02 second at the power output ranging from 0.15 to 0.2 W, and with focus size set at 50μm. Cases were followed up for one year or longer. Results:Foveal thickness, as measured by optical coherence tomograph, averaged 414μm before and 271μm 3 months after treatment. Macular edema either decreased or disappeared, with visual acuity ranging from 0.7 to 1.2, with 1.0 as the median. Macular edema recurred in 4 eyes 18 to 29 months later. It disappeared in 3 eyes following another session of photocoagulation. Conclusion:Short-duration photocoagulation of capillary microaneurysms in diabetic maculopathy resulted in decrease of foveal thickness and in reduction or disappearance of macular edema.
