Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide(TCA)and photocoagulation for diabetic macular edema. Cases and Method:This study was made on 19 eyes of 17 patients with diabetic macular edema. The series comprised 4 male eyes and 15 female eyes. The age ranged from 53 to 74 years, average 64 years. All the cases were followed up for 6 months or longer. Thirteen eyes were followed up for 13 months or longer. All the eyes received 20mg TCA as subtenon injection. Photocoagulation was performed 2 or 4 weeks later in grid pattern. Serum level of HbA1C was below 7.0mg/dl in 8 eyes and was over in 11 eyes. Therapeutic effect was evaluated using visual acuity and macular volume as indicators. Results:Eyes with well-controlled HbA1C showed significant and lasting improvement of macular edema. They also showed a tendency of improved visual acuity. Eyes with poorly controlled HbA1C showed temporary improvement of macular edema lasting 1 to 3 months only. Conclusion:Subtenon TCA injection with macular photocoagulation induces lasting improvement of diabetic macular edema in cases with well-controlled HbA1C.
