Purpose:To report the short-term outcome of macular photocoagulation and subtenon injection of triamcinolone acetonide(TCA)for diabetic macular edema. Cases and Method:This retrospective study comprised 16 eyes of 14 cases of diabetic macular edema. All the eyes received subtenon TCA injection followed,2 or 4 weeks later,by macular photocoagulation. All the cases were followed up for 12 weeks or longer. Results:During 12 weeks after treatment, visual acuity improved in 4 eyes(25%),and retinal thickness decreased in 50% of eyes. There was no significant correlation between visual acuity and retinal thickness,or between previous duration of macular edema and visual acuity or retinal thickness. Nine eyes, including 6 eyes with poor blood sugar control, were followed up for 32 weeks. In all the 9 eyes, visual acuity and macular edema returned to the pretreatment value. Conclusion:No lasting improvement of visual acuity or macular edema resulted from combined treatment with TCA injection and macular photocoagulation.
