Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of direct photocoagulation in short duration for microaneurysms causing diabetic macular edema. Cases and method:This retrospective study was made on 14 eyes of 13 patients. The microaneuryms were checked with fluorescein angiography and photocoagulated directly using yellow or green laser for 0.02 second with 50μm as spot size. Microaneurysms received one or more burns to obtain definite whitening. Focal photocoagulation was additionally applied to the edema detected by optical coherence tomography(OCT). Result:In all of 14 eyes the macular edema disappeared or reduced on OCT over than three months. Although bleeding was caused by photocoagulating a microaneurysm, the bleeding and edema were absorbed. Conclusion:Microaneurysms could be photocoagulated in short duration, and macular edema was absorbed. There was little damage by the photocoagulation. Short-duration photocoagulation for microaneurysm promised to be effective.
