We evaluated the effect of additional photocoagulation for progressive macular edema following panretinal photocoagulation in 19 eyes of diabetic retinopathy. Another series of 33 eyes with similar macular edema following panretinal photocoagulation was left without additional treatment. Twelve months later, the visual acuity improved in 28% of 19 eyes and in 32% of 33 eyes. The visual acuity before panretinal photocoagulation was achieved in 33% of 19 eyes and in 36% of 33 eyes. There were no significant differences between the two groups. The findings suggest that additional retinal photocoagulation is not effective for progressive macular edema following panretinal photocoagulation.
