Abstract. We performed cataract or glaucoma surgery on 46 eyes of 46 patients. During surgery, both eyes were kept open with the fellow eye fixating upon a target placed on the bottom of a paper cup. The operated eye remained stable with this method in 42 cases(91%). Unstable fixation with this method was due to poor visual acuity of the fellow eye and to advanced age. Nine such cases were asked to fixate on red or blue penlight through a hole in the bottom of the cup. This device succeeded in 5 cases(56%).
