Abstract. We evaluated the risk of contamination of bottle containing timolol maleate,an antiglaucomatous agent. Twenty-one glaucoma patients were asked to use two ophthalmic solutions for one week each. One bottle contained timolol alone and the other contained timolol and benzalkonium chloride.Incubation of smears from the bottle neck showed bacteria in 8 samples from the former and in 12 samples from the latter. There was no significant difference in the rate of contamination between the two groups. We then examined the isolated organisms regarding the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)after addition of benzalkonium chloride. Gram-positive bacteria showed low MIC and gram-negative ones showed high MIC.The findings show that bottles containing timolol alone have a low risk of contamination after clinical use. Benzalkonium chloride has a limited antiseptic effect for gram-negative bacteria.
