　βブロッカー薬である0.5％チモロール点眼薬に含まれる防腐剤塩化ベンザルコニウムが涙液と眼表面に及ぼす影響を検索した。対象は抗緑内障薬の初回投与を受ける18例で，これを2群に分け，1群には防腐剤含有，他の1群には防腐剤非含有の点眼をした。点眼開始から3か月後での涙液機能と角膜知覚には，両群間に差がなかった。フルオレセインスコアは防腐剤含有群が非含有群より高く，涙液破壊時間は点眼開始から1か月後より非含有群で延長していた。チモロール点眼では，防腐剤による角膜上皮障害の可能性に留意する必要がある。

　We evaluated the effect of preservative contained in 0.5％timolol ophthalmic solution on the ocular surface and tear fluid. We chose benzalkonium chloride as the preservative in our prospective,randomized study on 18 patients who received antiglaucoma medication for the first time. They were randomly divided into two groups. One group received 0.5％timolol eyedrops containing preservative. The other group received 0.5％timolol only. There was no difference in tear function test or corneal sensitivity after 3months of instillation between the two groups. The group receiving eyedrops with preservative showed higher fluorescein scores than the other. Tear break up time was prolonged after one month of instillation in the group receiving no preservative.
