Abstract. Purpose:To evaluate changes in contrast sensitivity after surgery for retinal detachment in eyes with full visual acuity. Cases:This study was made on 25 eyes of 25 patients with retinal detachment that received scleral encircling. All the eyes had corrected visual acuity of 0.9 or better. Contrast sensitivity was expressed as area under log contrast sensitivity function(AULCSF). Results:There was a significant difference in preoperative AULCSF between affected and contralateral eyes(p<0.05). There was no significant differences among corrected visual acuity in contralateral and affected eyes before or after surgery. Changes in contrast sensitivity after surgery was significantly correlated with the area of retinal detachment(rs=0.54,p<0.05). Conclusion:There is a decrease in contrast sensitivity in retinal detachment without macular involvement. The contrast sensitivity improves after reattachment. Rate of improvement is positively correlated with the area of retinal detachment.
