Abstract. Purpose:To compare the outcome of surgery for epiretinal membrane with or without adjunct use of triamcinolone acetonide. Cases and Method:This retrospective study involved 46 eyes of 46 patients who received peeling of epiretinal membrane by one surgeon during the past 39 months and who were followed up for 6 months or longer. Triamcinolone was used in 27 eyes and not in 19 eyes. Results:There was no significant difference in post-operative visual acuity between the two groups. Epiretinal membrane recurred in 2 eyes in which internal limiting membrane(ILM)was left intact. Triamcinolone was used in one eye and not in one. Out of 27 eyes receiving triamcinolone,ILM was peeled in 19 eyes and not in 8 eyes. There was no significant difference in postoperative visual acuity or foveal thickness between the two groups. Rate of decrease was greater in eyes receiving ILM peeling than the rest. Conclusion:Adjunct use of triamcinolone enhances the safety of surgery and intraoperative visibility of ILM and epiretinal membrane.
