  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the contrast sensitivity function in 20 patients with pigmentary retinal degeneration. Their visual acuity was 0.7 or better. The ages ranged from 20 to 59 years. The majority of patients in the twenties showed a loss of contrast sensitivity function in intermediate and high spatialfrequencies. All patients in the fifties showed nor-mal value or slight loss only in high spatial fre-quencies. As contrast sensitivity function reflects the macular and foveal functions, the present find-ings show that loss of contrast sensitivity function preceeds visual acuity loss in pigmentary retinal degeneration, particularly in the young. Contrast sensitivity function promises to be of value in predicting eventual visual acuity loss in this dis-ease.
