Abstract. Purpose:To report changes in contrast sensitivity following photodynamic therapy for age-related macular degeneration(AMD). Cases and Method:This study was made on 25 eyes of 21 patients who had visual acuity of 0.2 or better and who received photodynamic therapy for AMD. The series comprised 21 male and 4 female eyes. The age ranged from 54 to 88 years, average 70 years. Visual acuity was evaluated as logMAR. Results:Visual acuity improved after 3 months of treatment(p=0.029). The area under the contrast sensitivity curve improved also(p=0.0004). Changes in contrast sensitivity was negatively correlated with maximum diameter of fundus lesion(rs=-0.5366,p=0.0012). Conclusion:Contrast sensitivity is an accurate parameter for visual function following photodynamic therapy for AMD. The negative correlation between improvement of visual function and the size of fundus lesion indicates the importance of early treatment.
