Purpose:To identify factors related to occurrence and severity of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP)in very low birthweight infants. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 60 eyes of 60 infants who were admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit during 3 years through 2002. All the infants were born weighing 1,000g or less. In bilaterally affected cases, the more advanced eye entered the study. Cases with advanced ROP were treated by photocoagulation. Findings:ROP was present in 90% of infants. Photocoagulation was performed on 32% of infants. Presence of ROP was correlated with gestational age, duration of artificial ventilation, and total oxygen administration. It was independent of birthweight or Apgar score. None of above factors was correlated with severity of ROP. Conclusion:No factor could be identified as related to incidence or severity of ROP in very low birthweight infants.
