  • Look Inside

A case of radiation myelitis was reported. The fifty-four years old male with epipharyngeal carcino-ma and its cervical metastases had been treated with X-ray irradiation which was divided into three series. Eleven months after final treatment he began to complain of hypesthesia and pain at his left hand, forearm and lower extremity. Thereafter these sym-ptoms gradually progresed and he got into the quad-riplegia with urinary disturbance. Twenty months after onset of the symptoms he died.

At the autopsy, these was no metastatic tumor in the spinal canal. Microscopical examination reveals necrosis, gitter cell proliferation and demyelination at the level of cervical cord. We supposed the total dose which was given to cervical spinal cord of the patient amounted to about 7000r.

We have to avoid this undesirable complication caused by radiation treatment for malignant tumor as far as possible by means of various methods such as electron beam therapy or hollow up irradiation technique.
