  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The auther gave an autoptic investigation upon a case of chronic schzophrenia, who had been suffering from so-called myelitis and had died of septicemia after the course of two years at his 38 years of age.

Macroscopically, diffuse atrophy of the spi-nal cord between sixth and twelfth thoracal segment was observed. Along with this find-ing in central nervous system, bronchopneu-monia, pyelonephritis and purulent peritonitis were to be found.

Microscopic examination revealed the atro-phy of the spinal cord to be the results of continuous demyelination and gliosis. Further-more, a cavitation in posterior funiculus at the eighth thoracal segment, demyelination and cavitation of upper optic chiasma, gliosis along the wall of ventricles (especially in so-called "Wetterwinkel"), Wallerian degenerati-on of spinal cord and medulla oblongata, dis-seminated perivascular fibrous organization in the gray matter of the spinal cord etc. were recognized. The cell infiltration was but scarce, however, lipid granule cells and protoplasmatic astrocytes were neumerously observed in the demyelinated plaques of spi-nal cord.
