Recently the preclinical change of small airway due to air pollutant such as cigarette smoking has been known to cause premature closure of the small airway especially at dependent part of lung at higher lung volume than normal person without cigarette smoking, which is clearly evidenced by the so-called "closing volume" (CV) as measured by the single expiratory curve using a bolus of tagging material at residual volume (RV) such as 133-xenon.
