  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We have to resolve several new ethical issues when we use genomic and gentic information about a patient, because(1)it is unchangeable throughout the lifetime of the patient,(2)possibly predictive, and(3)possibly shared with relatives. Genetic counselling should be provided when the genetic information is used in clinical practice.

If a patient receives definite diagnosis of hereditary GI(gastrointestinal)tract disease by genetic testing, the genetic information about the patient is useful for presymptomatic testing of relatives. Thus, the GI tract specialist should refer the relatives of such patients to the department of clinical genetics or clinical geneticists.
