我が国の死因の1位は悪性新生物であり，そのうち食道がんの死亡数は全悪性新生物の3.1％を占めている。また2021年の罹患数は男性で21,900人，女性で4,700人と，日本人男性においては7番目に多いがん種であり，その数は年々増加傾向である^1）。

Malignant neoplasms are the leading cause of death in Japan, and esophageal cancer accounts for 3.1％ of all cancer-related deaths, the number of cases has been increasing in recent years. Radiation is one of important modalities of treatments for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma, radiation-containing therapies have been established the standard treatments in a wide range of clinical stages of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma based on the results of JCOG0502 and JCOG1109, JCOG0303. This article shares the major JCOG trials and their results of radiation therapy for esophageal cancer that have been conducted in Japan, and describes the future perspectives of radiation-related investigational treatments.
