Ⅰ．はじめに
精神薄弱児に純音聴力検査を施行することはできるだろうか，どの程度可能だろうか，知能指数との相関はあるだろうか，もし標準検査をそのまま施行することができないとしたらどのような改良を加えれば，信頼性のある結果を得ることができるであろうか。精神薄弱児における難聴の出現頻度は，これまでに諸外国で発表されてきたように，正常者群よりも高いのであろうか，もし高いとすれば，これは，精神薄弱児が音の感受に鈍いということであろうか，それとも，耳科的，あるいは，神経科的にとり出しうるなんらかの器質的な障害が正常者群よりも多いということであろうか，それとも，検査方法が適当でないために，正しい測定が行なわれなかつたということなのであろうか，といつたさまざまな疑問を抱きながら，1965年2月より，1966年1月までの1年間に，10カ所の精神薄弱児施設を訪問し，耳科的検診と，聴力検査を行なつた。ここにその経過と，結果を述べ，御参考に供したい。
Ten institutions for the mentally retarded children were visited and the clinical pure tone audiometry was carried out.
The total number of subjects examined was 675, among whom reliable audiogram was obtainable in 485 subjects with mean CA 15.8 years, mean IQ 47.2 and mean MA 7.5 years. With 111 subjects whose mean CA 15.5 years, mean IQ 31.8 and MA 4.9 years, the responses were unreliable, and 79 subjects with mean CA 14.1 years, mean IQ 26.6, and mean MA 3.8 years were not-testable.
Among the testable group over 30db average hearing loss at the speech frequencies was found in 79 ears, 8.2%.
