前頭前野と随意運動

Neuron activities of the monkey prefrontal cortex and voluntary movement

I．はじめに

　大脳半球の前の部分（前頭前野，前頭連合野，prefrontal cortex，frontal association cortex）が，感覚の受容や運動の発現以外の働らきに重要な場所であると考えられるようになったのはいつごろだろうか。感覚の受容や運動の発現に大脳が関係していることがはっきりしてから以後のことでなければならない。事実はそうで，はっきりとそのような考えを述べたのはHitzig（1874）（文献4のBianchiの引用による）であろう。HitzigとFritschと共同して運動野の存在を見つけたのは1870年のことであり^8），この発見の直後，すでに前頭前野の機能についての考えを持つに至っている。Hitzigは前頭葉の発達の具合を解剖学的に見て，イヌよりネコのほうが知能の発達が悪いし，サルに比べてもさらに悪いので，前頭葉の発達が知能の発達と相伴なっているので，前頭前野は最高の知能の座と結論したのであった。しかしHitzigの実験結果は，このことを確認しておらず，Hitzigのイヌは前頭葉を完全に除去しても，知能の障害を起こさなかったのは不幸なことであった。

　Hitzigに引き続いてFerrier，Munk，Goltz，Luciani，Grosglikなどが，サル，イヌなどで前頭葉の破壊実験を試みたが，後世に与える重要な結論には達しなかった。

　Recent single neuron studies of the chronic monkeys in learned task situations showed that dorsolateral prefrontal cortex is involved in analyses of the sensory information and initiation of the voluntary movement. Prefrontal neurons respond to visual or auditory stimuli contingent on the behavioral tasks and their activation appears to be related to an attentional mechanism. Prior to the voluntary movement, neuron activities appear specifically and/or non-specifically to be related to the movement but they are never earlier than 1.2s.
