I．低速中性子捕捉療法の存在理由

　いかなる癌の治療法にとっても，1）腫瘍の発育阻止，腫瘍の殺滅効果（tumoristatic, tumoricidal effect）ばかりでなく，2）患者身体の正常機能の保存をはかることが須要である。脳腫瘍の場合には，このことはとくに重要であって，いわゆる「植物状態」や，自分の身の廻りの世話もできない状態でかりに数年も生存が延長すると，家族の経済的その他の負担は膨大なものであるから，心身の機能の保存は，きわめて重要である。外科的治療に例をとるならば半球切除（hemispherectomy）のようなものはもちろん，望ましくない。薬物療法では比較的に機能保存が良好とされているが，その代り，生存延長がほとんど得られていない。放射線療法は生存延長効果が認められているが，生存の「質」は劣ると認定されている（Posncr, Shapiroら⁴⁶））。

Abstract

Few people may be opposed to the concept that immunological reactions are crucial in cancer cure. However, it is generally agreed upon that cancer cure may not be attained unless the total number of residual tumor cells is reduced to less than a certain number such as 10⁶ or 10⁸. The central nervous system tumor treatment has an indisput-ably important prerequisite: preservation of normal functions. Cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents have so far failed in extending the length of survival. Radiotherapy has been acknowledgedto extend the length, but does not guarantee the preservation of quality of survival.
