　その臨床像は比較的単純ではあるが，筋萎縮性側索硬化症が神経科学においてもつ意味はきわめて複雑かつ広範である。近年，わが国では本症に対する興味が増し，種々の角度から研究がすすめられている。

　本稿の目的は，著者の成績を中心に，本症に関する集団レベルの知見を集約し，その成因を遺伝的因子と環境的因子の両面から追求することである。なお，本症の疫学はBobowickとBrody（1973），Kurlandら（1973），近藤（1976）に概説され，遺伝学的事項はBecker（1966）にまとめられている。

Prevalence rates of motor neuron disease (MND) which includes amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), progressive bulbar paralysis (PBP) and spinal progressive muscular atrophy (SPMA) are fairly constant, being 2~4 per 100,000, excluding Kii peninsula and Guam island.

Mortality data of MND appear useful for epidemiologic studies, since the disease is fatal. MND is a major part of the code 348 in the 8th Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). Quality checks were attempted revealing that the diagnosis in the death certi-ficates of MND is reliable.
