Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: With special reference to statistical data of clinical manifestations

はじめに

　現在，種々の神経変性疾患の原因は不明であり，治療法も確立していない。中でも，筋萎縮性側索硬化症（以下ALSと略す）は，その代表であり，一般に，運動ニューロンのみを侵すという点でも特異な存在である。かかる疾患を解明することは，他の変性疾患究明への手掛かりを与える可能性もあり，そのような意味で，疾患解明の基本である臨床症状を詳細に分析し，諸外国におけるALSと比較検討しておくことは重要と思われる。

　ALSにおける臨床的分析は，これまで，本邦，および諸外国でかなり報告されているが，100例以上の症例を集計したものは少ない。

At present, the causes of various degenerative disorders of the central nervous system await our extensive investigations. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is one of those diseases, probably the most miserable and quite peculiar entity exclusively affecting the motor neurons. It might provide us with a clue to the causations of other degenerative diseases to solve the problems of ALS. For this aim, it seems to be quite important to evaluate the clinical manifestations in details and to compare ALS of Japan with that of other countries.
