  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We evaluated the macular function in 15 eyes of 15 patients who underwent surgery for retinal detachment. The ages ranged from 21 to 71 years, average 48 years. The macula was not apparently involved at the time of surgery. Retinal reattachment was obtained in all the 15 eyes. The differences in visual acuity between the operated and the fellow eyes were within one line in all the cases. When measured by Humphrey Visual Analyzer, the foveal threshold in the operated eyes was less than in the fellow eyes in 14 of 15 eyes (93%) . By multifocal electroretinogram, the positive wave amplitudes in the central area (<2.6°) and the paracentral area (2.7~5.4°) were smaller in the operated eyes than the fellow eyes in 12 eyes (80%) and 15 eyes (100%) respectively. The amplitudes in the paracentral area were remarkably decreased in all of 3 eyes treated by encircling scleral buckling. The findings seemed to show that scleral buckling unfavorably affects the macular function.
