Abstract Purpose:Prescribing low vision aids(LVA)is a central part of low vision care, however, approximately 30% of patients are reportedly dissatisfied with the LVA they are prescribed. LVA prescription methods that demonstrate the effectiveness of calculating magnification rates based on critical print size(CPS)and the effectiveness of evaluating reading speed with LVA(LVA reading speed)have been reported. However, these studies have not examined the relationship between LVA prescription and quality of life(QOL). We investigated whether the LVA reading speed index is also related to patients' QOL and examine the outcomes of LVA prescriptions.

Subjects and Methods:Between February 2018 and March 2020, thirteen patients requested LVA prescription for reading. Kyorin QOL assessment, reading and writing needs interview, and MNREAD-J were conducted before LVA prescription. QOL assessment and LVA reading speed were measured after LVA prescription.

Results:The LVA reading speed of 10 patients were above the lower limit of the 95% confidence interval(MRS-2 SD)of the maximum reading speed(MRS)and showed significantly improved QOL in the reading and writing domains(RW-QOL)(p<0.05). Two of the three patients with less than MRS-2 SD showed no improvement in RW-QOL, and whereas 1 patient showed improvement in RW-QOL owing to needs where speed was not important(spot reading).

Conclusions:Our results suggest that two outcome measures, LVA reading speed and RW-QOL along with calculation of the magnification rate based on CPS from the reading assessment, are useful for more effective prescription of LVA for reading.
