  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We reviewed a consecutive series of 36 patients seen in our low-vision service during a 13-month period. We paid particular attention to the needs of patients and residual visual function as related to actually prescribed low-vision aids. Among the needs of patients, reading difficulty ranked as the top (26 cases) followed by walking difficulty (13 cases). We prescribed photochromic spectacles for 6 of 13 cases who showed decreased contrast sensitivity and for 1 of 5 cases who showed reduced glare sensitivity. Among various items of examination, only the critical print size, or the smallest one which gives the maximum reading speed using MNREAD-J test, was significantly correlated with the power of prescribed magnifier. MNREAD-J was thus a useful test for prescribing low-vision aids.
