We evaluated the reading ability of the left eye of a 50-year-old male with retinitis pigmentosa. A reading chart MNREAD-J was used in the evaluation. His left eye had visual acuity of 0.7 and a central visual field of 4 degrees in diameter surrounded by a ring scotoma of 9 degrees in width. There were two peaks in the reading speed for larger and smaller sized characters. Fifteen months later, the visual acuity decreased to 0.5 with the central visual field reduced to 1 degree in diameter. There was no change in the outer border of the ring scotoma. The reading performance decreased for smaller characters and remained the same for larger ones. The findings show that there are two modes of reading in this low-vision patient with ring scotoma: one for reading small characters using the central visual field and the other for larger characters using the visual field outside the ring scotoma.
