Studies on the electric phosphenes

I．緒言

　電気閃光感覚について，1950年以来，私達はこれを純電気学的に測定する装置を考案し^1），種々の研究を重ねて来た。この装置を用いて始めて閃光感覚を認知した人々は，誰しも自己の眼がこのような感覚を有するのに一驚するのが常であった。当初，私達はこの測定法が眼科医によつて必須の診断法として駆使される日を予想したのであつたが，事実はこれに反した現状である。また，本川氏^2）をはじめとして生理学者，労働衛生学者などの間においても，疲労測定法の一つとして応用されてはいるが，それも限られた範囲内に留まつているようである。

　このように本法が広く普及しない理由としては正常人でも電気閃光感覚閾値の個人差が甚しく，かつ同一人でも測定毎の偏差が大であることが挙げられねばならない。このことは本感覚が種々の測定条件によつて変動しやすい欠点を示すものであるが，また一面，それだけにこの感覚が極めて鋭敏であることを証明するもので，使用の仕方によつては同時に優れた長所ともなり得るのではないかと思われる。

A modified electric phosphen method, which was developed by the authors and in which the flicker frequency remains constant and the intensity of flickr stimulus is the varia-ble factor, is described. The subject perceives distinct flickering phosphenes, when repeti-tive rectangular pulses of electric current are applied for stimulation of the subje-ct's eye while the voltage is slowlly increa-sed. Reading of the stimulation voltage is taken at the moment of appearance of the flicker (S₁). S₁ stands for the threshold of appearance ; S₂ for that of disappearance.
