  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The EEG of head injury was studied clini-cally and experimentally.

1) Clinical study:

EEG abnormalities, were seen statistically in 81% of 917 patients with episode of head injury: namely, in 88% of 168 cases of de-pressed fracture, in 100% of 18 cases of sub-dural hematoma and in 79% of other types of head injury. Voltage differences of homol-ogous area, spikes and slow waves were observed most frequently in head injury.

Focal EEG abnormalities, particularly high voltage foci, δ foci and "lazy activity" were observed predominantly in the region of de-pressed fracture.

In 18 cases of subdural hematoma, high voltage focus was seen more frequently than low voltage focus on the hematoma side. "Lazy activity" was always seen on the hem-atoma side. Postoperative EEG showed com-plete disappearance of "lazy activity" in sub-dural hematoma and slight improvement of voltage difference in depressed fracture.

Within 48 hours after head injury, EEG tracing showed bilateral abnormalities in all cases. In cases of posttraumatic coma, EEG showed marked diffuse slowing and gradually recovered to normal record as consciousness was regained.
