IVR（interventional radiology）は，画像診断技術をガイドとして経皮的に病変に到達し，生検や治療を行う手技の総称で，血管系と非血管系に大別される。消化管あるいはこれに隣接する病変では，経口的（経鼻的）あるいは経肛門的に病変に到達する場合もある。病変に到達する際のガイド用画像診断技術としては，X線透視，超音波，CTが一般的である。IVRは日本独特の呼称で，欧米では2つの単語の頭文字からIRと略すのが一般的である。なお，IVRは日本語では画像下治療と称されている。

Interventional radiology includes variety of vascular and non-vascular procedures done under image guidance. This article highlighted general perspective of pediatric interventional radiology（PIR）, the current status of PIR in Japan, and PIR in the emergency setting. As for PIR in the emergency setting, selected topics including role of embolotherapy for blunt splenic trauma and transrectal drainage for pelvic abscess were presented.
