The purpose of this study is to explore how schizophrenic patients acquire independence from drugs, and what factors influence the processes. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for 18 schizophrenic patients. Data were qualitatively analyzed in a grounded theory approach. "Recognition of drugs" was categorized first, and there were three main stages characterized by the degrees of independence from drugs. "Independent behavior category" helps to change the lower level of "recognition of drugs" into the upper level. Especially "Acquiring the knowledge of drugs and symptoms" helps to change the negative "Feelings about drugs" and shorten "The sense of distance between the patients and their doctors". To stop "drugs by the patient's own will" is also an essential experience for the shift to the upper level of recognition of drugs. "Skill category" has a supportive relationship with the "independent behavior category".
