The purpose of this study is to explore what factors prevent schizophrenic patients from communicating with doctors about drugs, and to examine appropriate clinical approaches. Semi - structured interviews were conducted for 34 schizophrenic patients. They were divided into two groups; one is the group whose members feel difficulties in talking about drugs with their doctors, and the other is the group whose members do not. Data were qualitatively analyzed in the grounded theory approach. "Image of the doctor" was categorized first, and it changes from "punisher" to "reliever", and to "collaborator" according to the relations between patient and doctor. The difference in the characteristics of interactions indicates the "obedient patient performance" category and the "deepening mutual understanding" category. "Acquiring the knowledge of drugs and symptoms" is the core concept which facilitates changing the "image of the doctor" and promotes the actual interaction between patient and doctor.
