Prognostic models are sometimes used to predict the prognosis of ICU patients. Prognostic models estimate the probability of outcomes of interest for a population of patients “like this patient” in the future after a certain period. Models are created in three phases:derivation, validation, and impact analysis. Models of long-term prognosis have been studied in ICU patients, but few models have been externally validated, and no impact analysis has been conducted. These models have limitations in study design, generalizability, and application to clinical practice. Probabilities determined by these models should be treated as one of several factors for decision making. Prediction models for long-term prognosis are still in their infancy. To use these models in clinical practice, external validation and impact analyses are needed.
