ex vivo/situ perfusion, or machine perfusion (MP), is a technology used in organ transplantation, developed in western countries under conditions such as limited numbers of donor organs, limited transportation distance, and primary graft dysfunction. Using this technology, a portable machine perfuses the donor organs during transportation to provide oxygen and energy to harvested donor tissue, to remove micro thrombi in the microcirculation, to evaluate organ function and administer medications, and to prevent injury due to cooling and warming in cold static storage. The cost-effectiveness and human resource requirements should be addressed from now on.
