Abstract:Rehabilitation medicine in Korea started for the disabled veterans after the Korean civil war in 1953, and later in 1972 the Korean Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine(KARM)was established and has contributed to the development of medical rehabilitation in Korea. The medical rehabilitation services for the disabled persons have expanded rapidly in Korea especially since the Disabled Persons Welfare Act was enacted in Korea with the proclamation of the International Year of Disabled Persons by the UN in 1981 and the 1988 Paralympics brought the nation's attention to the welfare of the persons with disabilities. Related professional associations such as Korean Physical Therapy Association, or academic societies of special interest areas have been well established as the rehabilitation medicine have developed. At the end of year 2009, there are 829 hospitals or clinics have a rehabilitation department providing medical rehabilitation services. There are 1,388 board certified rehabilitation medicine specialists in 2011. In addition, the number of working physical therapists is 24,091 at the end of June, 2011, the number of working occupational therapists is 3, 079. Korea has the 4 year residency training programs for rehabilitation medicine and currently there are 134 positions for each training year at 83 hospitals. The professional education and training programs with the national license examination for other rehabilitation professional alliance are established too. There are still many challenges and obstacles even though the rehabilitation medicine in Korea has made great development for the past 40 years both in researches and in practices. However, with increasing demand and support from society to search for healthier life and relentless effort by rehabilitation professionals, the medical rehabilitation in Korea will continue to expand its scope and applicability.
