  • Look Inside

A man aged 36, suffering from recurrent vertigenous attacks, in whom irritative lesion of the inner ear was suspected, is reported.

The examination showed the nystagmus to be directing towards the affected ear, which was deaf, while towards the opposite side during the symptomfree interval.

The deaf ear during the acute attack was anesthetized by per-tympanal application of 4% xylocaine; a marked improvement of nystagmus and dizziness were seen. These findings were considered as indicative of the presence of abnormal irritation in the vestibular labyrinth that induced the vertigenous at tacks. Labyrithectomy was conducted. Afer the operation the vertigenous attacks disappeared.

The morphological observation of the specimen obtained from the labyrinthectomy revealed under electron microscope degeneration of the hair cells as well as the myclinated fibers of the utricle. The afferent nerve endings appeared to be almost normal.
