  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

It has long been accepted that a damage (vas-cular, tumoral or degenerative origin) in the thalamus, particularly in the ventrolateral mass, may cause motor disturbances such as hemiparesis and abnormal movements (chorea, athetosis, tremor etc.)

However, precise observation of these cases revealed rather poor correlation between their symptom and the lesion. Moreover, together with long term experiences of the stereotactic thalamo-tomy for involuntary movements, we consider that most of the motor disturbances are associated with the concomitant extrathalamic (capsular or mesencephalic) damage rather than thalamic damage itself.
