  • Look Inside

Thalamic organization in five classes of non-mammalian vertebrates (cartilaginous fishes, bony fishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds) are described. The mammalian thalamus receives almost all kinds of sensory information (especially visual, auditory, and somatosensory information), and conveys them to the cerebral neocortex. Comparing with the mammalian thalamus, neuroanatomists have accu-mulated hodological data of various non-mamma-lian thalamic structures during the last 20 years.

Main visual thalamic nuclei, which receive retinal and tectal projections, are the Nucl. dor-solateralis anterior thalami, Nucl. geniculatus ven-tralis, and Nucl. rotundus in birds, Nucl. geniculatus lateralis and Nucl. rotundus in reptiles, anterior part of the Nucl. posterocentralis and Nucl. posterolateralis in amphibians, Nucl. dorsolateralis thalami, Nucl. ventromedialis thalami and Nucl. prethalamicus in teleosts, and Nucl. geniculatus lateralis and Nucl. opticus ventrolateralis in elasmobranchs. The auditory thalamus, which is thought to be homologous to the mammalian medial geniculate nucleus, is the Nucl. ovoidalis in birds, Nucl. reuniens pars centralis in reptiles, middle part of the Nucl. posterocentralis in amphibians, and Nucl. preglomerulosus in teleosts. The somatosensory thalamic nuclei are, Nucl. superficialis pars parvocellularis, Nucl. dorsol-ateralis posterior, and Nucl. triangularis in birds, Nucl. intermedio-dorsalis in reptiles, Nucl. anterior thalami, Nucl. ventromedialis thalami, Nucl. ventrolateralis pars ventralis, Nucl. posterior thalami, and the ventral thalamus in amphibians, Nucl. ventromedialis thalami in teleosts, and the Nucl. centralis thalami in elasmobranchs (Table 1).
