  • Look Inside

From July, 1990 to December, 1991 Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 89 of 336 (26.5%) sam-plings from the ear, 16 of 105 (15.2%) from the nose and sinus, 100 of 434(23%) from pharyngeal swabs and 7 of 110 (6.4%) from the other sam-plings at Otolaryngeal Outpatient Clinic of the Kitasato Institute Hospital. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) was discovered from 10 ptients with ear diseases and one with pharyngitis. Eight of the patients with MRSA infections of the ear were infants from an orphan asylum. As MRSA was isolated from the anterior nares in 15 of 46(32.6 %) of nurses of the orphanage, spread of MRSA infections might be caused by contacts with the nurses. MRSA was sensitive to chloramphenicole (CP), minomycin and ofloxacin (OFLX), therefore most patients were treated with topical and oral administration of CP and OFLX.
