We report a case of chemical burns of the oral, pharyngo-laryngeal, and esophageal mucosa caused by calcium oxide used as a desiccant. A 66-year-old man visited our hospital with the chief complaint of a burning sensation of the oropharyngeal mucosa and dysphagia after he mistook calcium oxide for a sweet and chewed it the day prior to presentation. On examination, we observed erosion and edema of the oral, pharyngo-laryngeal, and esophageal mucosa. The patient was treated with antibiotics and corticosteroid and recovered without any complications. Owing to increasing life expectancy and rapid population aging, the number of individuals with dementia is expected to increase, with a consequent increase in the number of cases of accidental ingestion of calcium oxide used as a desiccant.
