  • Look Inside

We surveyed the complications of acyclovir ophthalmic ointment in 11 institutions during the foregoing one-year period. A total of 255 patients were treated by acyclovir ophthalmic ointment for keratopathy due to herpes simplex or zoster virus. The series comprised 142 males and 113 females. The age averaged 48 ± 20 years. Complications were observed in 73 cases, including superficial punctate keratopathy 72 cases, conjunctival erosion 3 cases and blepharitis 2 cases. Complications became manifest after an average of 19.6 ± 14 days of treatment. Superficial punctate keratopathy involved the inferior hemisphere of the cornea in 39 cases. The complications promptly disappeared after discontinuation of acyclovir treatment.
