  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A 9-year-old girl developed ciliary injection in her left eye seven days after onset of epidemic parotiditis, or mumps. The anterior chamber showed fibrinous coagula. Severe conical opacity developed despite topical treatment with dexamethasone. The opacity disappeared five days later. The affected cornea showed reduced number of endothelial cells. The right eye remained intact throughout. It appeared that the breakdown of the blood-aqueous barrier by iritis allowed invasion of mumps virus into the aqueous leading to damage of the corneal endothelial cells.
