  • Look Inside

We reviewed 53 cases of varicella zoster virus keratitis during the past 9.5 years. The keratitis was classified into 4 types based on the clinical features: epithelial 46 eyes, anterior stromal 7, stromal 17 and limbal 6. Neurotrophic ulcer 5 eyes and lipid keratopathy 4 eyes were considered as secondary lesions. The epithelial type comprised 39 superficial punctate keratitis, 11 pseudodendrities, 2 corneal erosion and 2 mucous plaque keratitis. The stromal type included 9 discform keratitis, 8 diffuse keratitis and 2 necrotizing keratitis. Nine cases of keratouveitis manifested stromal type keratitis. The limbal type comprised 2 limbal infiltrations, 3 sclerokeratitis and 2 marginal ulcers. The varicella zoster keratitis thus manifested a variety of corneal lesions in sharp contrast to herpes simplex keratitis. Anterior stromal type and some limbal lesions appeared to be relatively specific for varicella zoster keratitis.
