  • Look Inside

We reviewed 625 eyes of 606 cases with ocular trauma seen by us during 7 years ending 1995. The series comprised 476 eyes in males and 149 eyes in females, or at the ratio of 3.2 to 1. Patients in the second decade of life formed the largest group at 25.0% of the series. The causes of trauma included accidents in daily life at 24.8% and sports-related activities at 19.7%. The most common type of eye injury was angle recession, followed by traumatic iritis, corneal erosion and retinal concussion in the descending order. Baseball and soccer injuries accounted for 58.5% of sports-related injuries. Injury by soccer ball was most commonly associated with lesion in the superior fundus sector. Injury by baseball frequently involved the inferior fundus sector. Impairment of visual acuity to 0.2 or less was present in 72 eyes. Injury to these eyes mainly resulted from fighting or professional work. Intraocular foreign body, retinal detachment and optic nerve atrophy indicated poor prognosis.
