  • Look Inside

Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis developed bilaterally in a 49-year-old male after intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH). During vitrectomy and lens extraction in his right eye, we obtained sam-ples of aqueous humor, the vitreous and lens nucleus after prior intravenous administration of 200 mg fluconazole. The concentration of flucon-azole against the serum level was 0.736 in the aqueous humor, 0.695 in the vitreous and 0.385 in the lens nucleus. We also examined the intraocular penetration of fluconazole in albino rabbits. There were relatively high fluconazole concentrations in ocular tissues in vitrectomized and nonvitrectom-ized rabbit eyes. The findings show that flucon-azole readily penetrates into ocular tissues.
